Pressures of motherhood

Added 2nd of July 2008

For some women motherhood is not always the happy experience they had hoped it would be. A pregnancy whether planned or not, creates a whole range of emotions that affect many areas of a woman's life:

  • Her sense of identity
  • Loss of independance
  • Overwhelming feelings of responsibility for a new baby
  • Fears and anxieties of how she will cope
  • Her relationships with her partner, parents and friends

All these issues battle against the woman's own internal pressures that she must somehow be "super woman", coping with broken or very little sleep, a tantruming toddler, keeping the house clean and tidy, a demanding job, or the pressure to return to work, and being the sexy lover who is able to meet all her partners needs in the bedroom!

Motherhood was never meant to be so pressured and so demanding, yet for many women they suffer in silence, not knowing where to turn because the expectation to prove they can "do it all" often outweighs the cry for help.

At Skylight we recognise now more than ever before that all aspects of pregnancy, (including abortion and miscarriage), childbirth, and parenting create pressures that not only affect the woman's ability to enjoy her role as mother, but also robs her of the vital bonding process that enables parent and child to feel safe, secure, and loved.

So whether you have experienced birth trauma, abortion(s), miscarriage(s), post-natal depression, or are struggling to bond with your baby, we at Skylight are here to listen and help you voice your concerns. Our hope is that you will be empowered and enabled to break the silence and will be able to accept your limitations as you find again your true identity and self-worth.
